At least 29 people were killed in an armed attack targeting a civilian gathering in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria, marking a new escalation in the violence affecting the region, according to local authorities.
The attack occurred on Sunday afternoon, April 26, when residents of Guyaku, mostly young people, had gathered at a local football field. Armed assailants arriving on motorcycles opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd, causing casualties and widespread panic.
Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri confirmed the death toll, noting that many of the victims were youths, including young women who had been watching the match. Survivors said the attackers continued shooting before setting fire to homes, places of worship, and motorcycles, then retreating toward nearby forested areas.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack through its communication channels, while security analysts attribute the operation more specifically to Islamic State West Africa Province, which maintains an operational presence in northern Adamawa and along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.
Observers say the attack reflects a tactical shift by insurgent groups, which increasingly target unprotected civilian locations such as schools, markets, and recreational sites in order to instill fear and undermine confidence in state security.
Governor Fintiri visited the site of the attack, describing it as a “tragic and unacceptable” incident, and announced an intensification of security measures in the area, pledging that those responsible would be brought to justice.
Military deployments have been reinforced under Operation Hadin Kai, with additional troops deployed to pursue the attackers across difficult terrain and border areas.
At least 10 injured survivors are receiving treatment at local health facilities, many with severe gunshot wounds, according to medical sources.
The attack comes amid a broader surge in violence across northern Nigeria, including a separate incident in which an orphanage in north-central Nigeria was attacked and 23 children abducted. Security forces rescued 15 of the victims, while eight remain missing.
Analysts warn that Nigeria’s security situation remains complex, as military operations have reduced insurgent territorial control but have not eliminated their capacity to carry out high-impact attacks on civilian targets.
Adamawa State, particularly border areas such as Gombi, remains vulnerable to infiltration due to its geography and porous borders, despite ongoing security operations.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements as search operations continue in the area.
