Malian government sources, along with individuals close to the defence minister’s family, have confirmed the death of General Sadio Camara in an attack that took place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, inside the Kati military base near Bamako. According to available information, a car bomb targeted his residence, followed by exchanges of gunfire. International media reports also indicated that his second wife and two of his children were killed in the attack.
Camara was considered one of Mali’s most influential military figures in recent years. He was born on March 22, 1979, in Kati—the same city where he was killed—and graduated from the Joint Military Academy in Koulikoro. Prior to the 2020 coup, he served as director of the military school in Kati and underwent advanced military training in Russia, forming the basis of his later close ties with Moscow.
He emerged as a central pillar of the ruling military council, playing a key role in the August 2020 coup alongside Assimi Goïta. He was also at the center of the May 2021 crisis, when his temporary removal from the defence ministry prompted Goïta to detain interim president Bah Ndaw and government officials in what became known internationally as a “coup within a coup,” ultimately restoring Camara to his post.
In terms of defence policy, Camara was closely associated with Mali’s strategic realignment. He led a phased process to end Western military presence, beginning with diplomatic pressure on France, followed by the termination of Operation Barkhane and the European Takuba Task Force, and culminating in efforts that led to the withdrawal of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in 2023.
At the same time, Camara worked to strengthen military cooperation with Russia. Analytical reports indicate that he played a leading role in negotiating the deployment of Wagner Group personnel to Mali, under arrangements that included security support in exchange for access to mining resources. Following the death of Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, he contributed to restructuring Russian operations under the “Africa Corps” framework overseen by the Russian Ministry of Defence.
According to analytical sources, Camara served as the primary link between Bamako and Moscow, making him a pivotal figure in consolidating the military partnership at a time of rising security threats across northern and central Mali.
His death comes at a sensitive moment, with escalating attacks by armed groups and expanding military operations raising questions about the leadership’s ability to maintain cohesion without one of its key strategists.
Observers suggest that Camara’s absence could trigger shifts in internal power dynamics within the military council and may affect the trajectory of cooperation with international partners, particularly Russia, which relied on him as a key guarantor of its security arrangements in Mali.
As tensions persist on the ground, Mali appears to be entering a critical phase that could shape its future stability, amid overlapping security and political challenges and intensifying competition among local and international actors in the Sahel.
