It was all blue at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Wednesday, April 1, as District Six stormed to victory in the Inter-District Primary School Athletics Championships. Representing Vieux Fort and nearby areas, District Six ended District Eight’s winning streak, despite some brilliant individual performances from the Soufrière/Canaries team.
Heavy morning rains eventually gave way to brilliant sunshine, excellent weather for athletics. Teachers, parents, family members, and fellow students were out in force to cheer the youngsters at the penultimate sporting activity of the term.

In the early going, Shandre Fontenelle’s gold in the Under-13 boys’ 1200m and silver in the 600m helped District Five (Dennery and Micoud) take the lead with 135 points, ahead of District Six and the defending champions. However, after the sprints, District Six moved ahead by 17 points.

After the relays, the new champions had extended their advantage to 41 points, winning 311 to 270 over District Eight. Their girls won 180 to 149. District Five put up a good fight, finishing third with 224 points. Their boys led the way with 138 points, to 131 for District Six. District Two (North Castries) had 212 points, District One (Gros Islet and Babonneau) 173.
District Eight won three of the eight individual trophies. Shervel Gonzague won the Under-9 girls’ 60m in 9.70 seconds and the 150m in 23.52 seconds. Keyanni Gilbert took the ball throw and won the Under-11 600m in 2:07.03. Kayla Gills stormed to victory in the Under-13 80m (11.02) and 150m (20.10). Namika Bellas of District Two dominated the over-13 category.

Among the boys, Clevon McLawrence stood out in the Under-9 class by winning the 60m in 9.23 seconds and finishing second in the 150m for District Three. Avary Maryat ran 20.63 and 46.74 in the 150m and 300m, repeating as an Under-11 double champion for District One.
In the top two boys’ divisions, the honours were shared. District Five’s Fontenelle was one of three in the Under-13s. Vijay Blanchard was the only individual award winner for District Six, winning the 80m and taking second in the 150m. District One’s Asa Emmanuel won the 150 and was second in the 80. Similarly, Jeanquan JnPierre of District Three and Javan William of District Two each won a gold and a silver.
