Dominant Soufrière take U13 cricket title

Tight bowling and a sparkling all-round outing from Eddison Symphorien propelled Soufrière to victory on Saturday, December 6, in the final of the inaugural Saint Lucia National Cricket Association Under-13 Grassroots Tournament.

With Christmas tunes ringing out beneath clear blue skies at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort, the boys from Sulphur City defeated Babonneau by 13 runs to win the Laborie Credit Union-backed tournament. They lost only once en route to the final.

Soufrière struggled to a total of 71 all out in 13.1 overs. Symphorien made 16, but he was easily the standout batter, as there were four ducks, and nobody else got past eight. Michael Jones took three wickets for Babonneau, whilst Jeanette Wilfred, Vincy Cadasse and Kerlani Williams had two each in a balanced bowling attack.

Babonneau’s dangerous middle order was exposed early, when Jahim Mathurin and Kerlani Williams were sent back without troubling the scorers. Vincy Cadasse hit a quickfire 15, including a six and a four. Jovannie Dorville included three fours in his 20. But once Soufrière saw their backs, the path to victory became a lot clearer.

Babonneau, the only northern team in the final four, made 58 all out in just 11.5 overs. Symphorien’s three wickets were well backed up by two from Alaska James.

The celebrations will continue beneath the Pitons well through the holidays.
