*Drake’s latest album rollout is drawing attention for more than its streaming numbers. According to INDE News, the rapper spent approximately $120,000 to obtain one of Michael Jackson’s famous crystal-covered gloves, which appears prominently on the cover artwork for “Iceman.”
The purchase arrives at a moment when Drake is continuing to add to his chart achievements. The release has already sparked industry discussion because Drake recently tied Jackson for the most No. 1 hits, making the use of the glove appear symbolic as well as stylistic. Jackson famously wore the accessory during major televised performances, including “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever,” where it became one of pop culture’s most recognizable stage pieces.
While the glove later evolved into a signature fashion statement, it also carried personal significance for Jackson. As Distractify reports, during earlier years, the singer publicly framed the look as a creative decision, saying, “I felt that one glove was cool… wearing two gloves seemed so ordinary.”
Questions surrounding Jackson’s light complexion eventually led to broader public discussion about vitiligo, the skin condition he later acknowledged in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. “It’s a problem for me that I can’t control,” Jackson said.
Actress Cicely Tyson previously explained the practical reason behind the glove’s creation during a CNN interview. “The glove was to cover the vitiligo; that’s how that glove came into being,” Tyson stated. As Jackson’s condition progressed, the accessory became closely tied to both his image and the scrutiny he faced throughout his career.
Beyond the album artwork, “Iceman” is also generating major commercial momentum. Early projections suggest the project could earn roughly 520,000 album-equivalent units in its opening week, positioning Drake for a potential 15th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart.
Streaming activity surrounding the release has also surged. Reports indicate Drake collected around 250 million Spotify streams on release day, while “Iceman” reached No. 1 on Apple Music in 79 countries alongside companion releases “MAID OF HONOUR” and “HABIBTI.”
