There’s a calm buzz in the room as Tracie Thoms settles into the rhythm of getting ready for The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiere. Music is floating somewhere between Motown classics and smooth ’90s R&B. “Nothing too hype,” Thoms tells ESSENCE. “Kinda chill to keep everybody calm in the room… but yeah, we’re having a good time. It’s a party vibe because we’re gonna have a good time tonight.”
Tonight is no ordinary night. As one of the film’s only returning cast members, the moment carries even more weight than before. “I feel excited, I feel like I’m so ready to see everybody and their fashion for tonight. I’m just happy to be here and be part of such a big beautiful project. I’m nervous, but mostly excited!”
It’s been two decades since The Devil Wears Prada first premiered in 2006. Now, stepping back into that world for a second time feels surreal. “This movie is such an iconic film and I’m so grateful to be a part of it,” she reflects. “When we shot it twenty years ago, we had no idea that this movie would be the iconic experience that it’s been for all of us… I’m just ready to go on this ride!”
But first, glam. Sitting in the hair and makeup chair, Thoms grounds herself in intention. While the red carpet can feel overwhelming, “I just kind of visualize the night as I’m getting ready, and breathe through it and try to remember that this is fun, and not stressful,” she explains. “I think about all the things that I want to accomplish, all the people that I want to see, how I want to feel at the end of the day… and focus on that.”
This time around, that meant not shying away from the well-deserved attention. While her character, Lily, plays the supportive art-gallery-assistant best friend of Andy Sachs via Anne Hatheway, tonight was all about stepping into the spotlight. “I wanted to make bold choices tonight,” Thoms says. “I usually play it very, very safe, but we have a dress that is like a work of art… and we want to meet the moment and take some risks.”
Her look? Rockstar Chic, as described by her makeup artist LaSonya Gunter. That meant a smokey eye (by way of a Dynessa Myricks Light Work Palette) with shimmering gold added to the center of her eyelids and inner corners. Meanwhile, Thoms’ blonde locs were >Cody Ainey described as a “sculptural editorial take on natural textured hair.”
The actress’ look was completed with a Christian Siriano dress featuring a voluminous bustier and a sleek pencil skirt. The fabric’s liquid-like finish enhanced the rich magenta tone before tying everything together with a metallic pump. And, not for no reason.
This bold fashion statement marked a turning point for Thoms. “It’s a fresh new era, particularly for me,” she shares. “I just turned 50 last year and [I’m] trying to have more fun and be more bold.” However, off the carpet, hersrc="https://media.essence.com/vxcjywbwpa/uploads/2026/04/GettyImages-106026679-scaled.jpg" alt="Exclusive: Get Ready With Tracie Thoms For ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Premiere" width="400" height="600" />How it started…
How its going…
Glam is officially underway.
Makeup Artist, LaSonya Gunter, went for a “halo effect” on the eyes… and she delivered
A close-up of the textured mohawk in the making.
A side profile of the hair and glam in full detail.
Intricacy is an understatement.
And the final look.
And a few snaps before heading out the door.
Then it’s time to go.
