Governor Josh Stein angered a lot of conservatives on Sunday, when he ordered flags to fly at half-staff this week to honor activist Gloria Steinem, who died last week.
But the governor’s idea blew-up on social media, with people blasting Stein for honoring a radical left-winger.
Monroe Mayor Robert Burns said, “She doesn’t live in the state of North Carolina. This is just brownie points for his far left activism.”
Burns — and many other posters on social media — said the Governor’s assertion that Gloria Steinem helped American women make “real strides” is ridiculous.
He said her claim to fame is pushing abortions.
“I’m outraged. He’s going to order flags to be lowered for a woman who believes in killing babies all the way up to birth.”
Mayor Burns is a Republican, he plans to run for governor in two years. For now, he is urging cities and businesses to ignore the Governor’s order to fly flags at half staff. Legally, the order carries no weight, except on state property. Local governments and businesses are not required by law to lower their flags, and dozens of people online say they will not go along with Stein’s request.
Many called the order disgusting, with another writing on X to say, “No thanks, we’ll be keeping ours at full staff. We don’t honor baby killers.”
Steinem died at the age of 92. She was the face of the Women’s Liberation movement of the 60’s and 70’s. And she was outspoken that abortion should be legal with no restrictions on when it’s performed during a pregnancy.
In issuing the flag order, Governor Stein said Steinem was “an advocate for freedom and equality.”
