Former Gambian Information Minister Demba Ali Jawo has reported that his United States visa has been revoked, several years before it was due to expire.
Jawo said he received an email on 16 September 2026, purportedly from the U.S. Embassy in Banjul, informing him that his five-year visa, which was scheduled to expire in 2029, had been revoked.
According to Jawo, the communication stated that the decision was based on information that emerged after the visa was issued indicating that he “may be ineligible” for the visa. Jawo said he has no idea what information may have prompted the decision.
Jawo served as Minister of Information and Communication Infrastructure in President Adama Barrow’s first administration from 2017 until his removal from Cabinet in 2018.
The reported visa revocation comes months after Jawo publicly complained that he was no longer being invited to certain government and state functions. Jawo said that, despite his criticism of the Barrow administration, he had previously continued to receive invitations to official functions, including Independence Day celebrations. He alleged that this later changed and that he was excluded from several events, including the President’s annual media dinner, the national dialogue forum and the 61st independence anniversary celebrations.
Jawo attributed those exclusions to his increasingly critical position toward the government and his association with APEX, a group he described as seeking to bring opposition parties together ahead of the presidential election.
There is presently no established evidence linking the reported U.S. visa revocation to his political activities, his criticism of the Barrow government or his exclusion from state functions. Jawo himself said he does not know what prompted the U.S. action.
The Daily Observer Gambia is investigating the story, and at the time of going to press, no comment had been received from the U.S. Embassy in Banjul or from the Gambia government.
