With countless miles already behind him, Francois Janse Van Rensburg is walking all the way from Windhoek in Namibia to Somerset West in the Western Cape on an inspiring mission to raise vital funds and change lives at the Somerset West Night Shelter.
Western Cape, South Africa (31 May 2026) – It has been 35 days on the road, and Francois Janse Van Rensburg is as determined as ever to see his mission through – a mission to change lives in the Helderberg community.
>A little over a month ago, Francois embarked on a self-motivated 1,500 km journey to walk from Windhoek to Somerset West, aiming to raise awareness and funds for a charity close to his heart: the Somerset West Night Shelter.
Since 1988, the shelter has served single adults in the Helderberg area. In 2020, it expanded its services to accommodate homeless families with children, making the Family Shelter the only one of its kind in the Western Cape to cater to single mothers, single fathers, and couples with children.
Beyond providing accommodation, the organisation offers a wide range of services, including skills training, rehabilitation, counselling, and daycare. Their programmes provide employment opportunities, school transport, social services, and education.
Countless lives have already been changed in the most positive and uplifting ways, and Francois is walking the distance to ensure that even more people are empowered and supported.

He has dubbed his bold initiative ‘Walk the Talk’ and is nearing an exciting close. On Day 33 (27 May), he walked through thick fog for the first three hours and endured a few tough uphills, especially the climb near Clanwilliam, covering about 15 km with very limited visibility.
“I completed 35kms today, bringing my total distance covered to 1,258kms. With only 10 days left until the finish on June 6, the countdown has officially begun! For the next two nights, we’ll be staying at another guest farm, Klein Boshoek Swemgat, about 10 km outside Clanwilliam, surrounded by the stunning Cederberg mountains,” shared Francois, who ended the day 2 kms south of Clanwilliam.
Donations currently stand at R60,070, just shy of Francois’ R75,000 goal.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey so far. Every donation helps and is deeply appreciated,” he said.
