“I Was Never a Side Chick”: Nicole Nyaba On Her Relationship With AKA. Nicole Nyaba has once again addressed the long-standing speculation surrounding her past relationship with late South African rapper AKA, firmly denying claims that she was ever his “side chick.”

Speaking in a recent interview on Engineer Your Life with Lungelo KM, Nyaba said the rumours that first surfaced in 2017 were false because she and AKA were not romantically involved when those allegations emerged.

“I was never a side chick,” she said. “That was false because that came out, I think, September 2017, and we were not even close. We knew each other, but we were never romantically involved at that time.”

According to Nyaba, the speculation appeared to be aimed at damaging AKA’s reputation rather than reflecting the reality of their relationship.

“I think it was just people trying to hurt him or his relationship or his reputation. I think it was more about him than about me,” she explained.

Nyaba maintained that when she and AKA eventually entered into a relationship, he was single.

Asked whether she had ever been involved while he was in any of his public relationships, she replied, “I wasn’t. I’m positively sure.”

However, she revealed that their relationship later came to an abrupt and painful end when AKA began another high-profile relationship while they were still together.

“We were in a relationship, and he got into another relationship,” she recalled. “He explained to me that this is what he needed to do as a man, and he was sorry. But at that time I couldn’t hear what he was saying because I had to confront him about it before he even told me.”

Nyaba said she believes that if she had not confronted the rapper, he may have continued seeing both women simultaneously.

“If I hadn’t confronted him about it, he might have gone on with me and her at the same time.”

During the interview, the host suggested that AKA’s decision may have been influenced by his public image and the belief that dating another well-known personality would benefit his brand.

Nyaba agreed with that interpretation, responding, “I think that was the case.”

She also shared that despite the heartbreak, the pair remained in contact for a period afterwards. She recalled visiting AKA at his home on his birthday the year after the public fallout in 2018, describing it as one of several encounters they had after their relationship had ended.

Nyaba’s latest remarks offer further insight into one of South African entertainment’s most talked-about relationships, while challenging a narrative that has followed her for years.
