Brooklyn was covered in flags, feathers, sequins and plenty of Caribbean pride as hundreds of thousands of people gathered along Eastern Parkway for New York City’s annual West Indian American Day Parade. Check out photos from the celebration inside.

The celebration brought together Caribbean communities from across the diaspora for a day filled with music, food, dancing and elaborate costumes. From soca and reggae to dancehall and Haitian kompa, the parade transformed Brooklyn into a colorful celebration of Caribbean identity and culture.

As Gothamist reported, attendees proudly represented their home countries through flags, national colors and costumes. One Belizean attendee, Fatima Abney, arrived dressed from head to toe in the blue and red colors of Belize. For many, showing up was about more than watching a parade. It was about being in community.

For the Haitian community, this year’s celebration carried an especially powerful meaning.

Haitian participants marched against the backdrop of increased immigration enforcement and the loss of Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in the United States. Yet the parade remained a space for pride, cultural expression and resilience.

Natalie Lafontant — who organizes the Haitian masquerade group Lespri Ayiti — told the Associated Press that Haitians continue to use music, dance and art to push through difficult moments. Her group brought approximately 180 artists, designers, musicians and community members to the parade.

The costumes themselves told stories of Haitian history and achievement. Designers created pieces inspired by revolutionary leader Jean Jacques Dessalines, Haitian athletes and the nations connected to Haiti’s revolutionary history.

A Celebration That Belongs To Everybody

The parade also highlighted the many identities that make up New York’s Caribbean community. Revelers traveled from across the city and beyond, with some attending the early morning J’Ouvert celebration before joining the parade.

One attendee, Eliel Pacheco, traveled from the Bronx and celebrated alongside friends from Jamaica and Barbados. He described the experience as a chance to continue a tradition created by Caribbean people and simply be together.

Even with increased security along the route, the celebration continued.

Even Mayor Mamdani showed his love for Caribbean culture, marching alongside attendees and celebrating the day.

There was jerk chicken, fresh juice, music blasting from floats and people dancing in the streets. There were elaborate costumes, national flags and generations of families showing up to celebrate where they come from.

The West Indian American Day Parade reminds us that Caribbean culture has a home in New York, and Brooklyn knows how to make room for the whole diaspora to shine.
