In a city known for shaping the course of history, Montgomery is stepping into a new era… one defined by creativity, culture, and intentional storytelling. At the center of this evolution is A Fine & Dandy Affair
, a multi-dimensional experience that blends heritage with modern expression through fashion, art, and community.
Spearheaded by Cultural Affairs Director Jennifer Dobbs, the event is more than a celebration, it’s a statement. This cultural moment positions Montgomery as both a place of remembrance and a rising hub for innovation. In this conversation, Dobbs shares the vision behind the experience, the meaning of modern dandyism, and how this affair is only the beginning of something much larger.

A Fine & Dandy Affair
feels like more than an event…it’s a cultural statement. What was your original vision, and how did you ensure it honored Montgomery’s legacy while introducing a new narrative?
My vision began with a want to fulfill Mayor’s Steven L. Reed’s desire to elevate the visibility of City’s strong arts and culture community. I began by envisioning a signature event that would include seldom-used ideas, people, places and things and highlight everything about Montgomery – its people, businesses, sites, culture, and more. A dandyism pathway seemed to be the answer – from its historical existence to its modern application, I believed it to be a powerful (and fun!) statement to make about the forward direction of Montgomery.
Montgomery is deeply rooted in history, yet this experience feels modern and fashion-forward. How did you balance heritage with contemporary cultural expression?
A Fine & Dandy Affair
allows two things to be true at once, with use of the word “and.” Montgomery is a city replete with world-changing history, and, it is one with a strong, impactful arts and culture community. This event allows everyone to pay homage to Montgomery’s past while celebrating the history currently being created throughout the city.

Your partnership with ESSENCE elevates this to a national platform. What did that alignment unlock creatively and strategically?
ESSENCE is a time-honored, dare I say, institution that connects with millions of people from around the globe. The partnership allows two things – for ESSENCE to be a ground-floor participant of Montgomery’s transformation to a cultural behemoth, and for the City to be exposed to new resources and audiences in new ways, far and wide. Creatively and strategically, the partnership is mutually beneficial for the right reason – to celebrate the revered City of Montgomery and all within.
From workshops to a dandy-inspired gala, the experience is intentionally layered. What do you want attendees, especially Black creatives and entrepreneurs- to walk away with?
Attendees should walk away with a new understanding and perspective about the City of Montgomery, and better yet – of themselves. I want them to walk away having garnered a wealth of knowledge about their person, their business, this city and more. Better yet, that this is a terrific place for them to settle and contribute to our cultural movement.
You’ve emphasized that “the event is for everybody.” How are you redefining what inclusive luxury looks like through this experience?
When planning events, I always consider how to create accessibility and eliminate, as much as possible, access to participation. As a concept, dandyism has existed since the 18th century and was originally embodied by those of influence, no matter their gender or ethnicity. Today, greater ability exists for people of every socioeconomic background to become a dandy; even more, to dandify their cultural attire and define elegance in new, thoughtful, educational, and exciting ways.
Looking ahead, do you see A Fine & Dandy Affair
evolving into a larger cultural movement—and what impact do you want it to have long-term?
The answer is simply, “Yes.” Included in the meaning of the term “affair” is “a sequence of events;” A Fine & Dandy Affair
intentionally includes future scalability. At some point, in the very near future, I want Montgomery to be a notable destination point, for both history and culture.
In today’s cultural landscape, what does “Dandy” mean to you?
To me, being “dandy” means “impeccably coiffed” in several ways. Not only does it describe extravagantly bespoke fashion, but it also includes a resolute state of mind, expression and stance around individuality, resistance, history, politics, gender and – you guessed it! – arts and culture storytelling. To all my lovely dandies, be that and do that, and put on for Montgomery on May 16.
