Inside ONE YARD: The HBCU Experience At Bowie State University

School is officially back in session, and students at Bowie State University got to start the semester off with a welcome party they won’t forget. On Thursday, August 27th, ONE YARD: The HBCU Experience landed at the Maryland campus—the first stop of a two-city campus tour—bringing the energy, spirit, and community that define the HBCU experience.

There was plenty to do all day long—with live music, games, and chances to connect. The event launched with a showstopping routine by the Symphony of Soul marching band and a word from Bowie State President Aminta Breaux.

A business pitch competition followed, where entrepreneurial Bulldogs got to flex their hustles to a panel of experts in front of a live audience. They shared their ideas, received valuable feedback, and left with new connections to grow their network.

Things got competitive at TV One’s A Different World trivia contest, hosted by Kyle On The Mic, where students battled it out over prizes like Ray-Ban Meta glasses, JBL speakers, and even flights. DJ Little Bacon Bear set the vibe across the event, which drew more than 600 people on campus. The Aura Arcade gaming hub brought endless fun with an educational twist hosted by PlayVS, Urban One’s partner for the Power 4+ HBCU E-Sports League. The tailgate-themed food truck zone served up Hoops Seafood, Dessert Junkie, and more.

Students took time to relax as they were treated to haircuts by Certy Clipz and custom skin analysis by Peel Haus Aesthetics. They centered themselves with yoga and meditation led by Blind Seed, staying grounded and feeling energized ahead of a productive school year.

There was more to explore, with chances to shop exclusive merchandise on-site. Your University Row marketplace put Black-owned businesses front and center, while the Come Up pop-up stocked custom ONE Yard apparel and merch that gave a fresh spin on classic collegiate style.

As the day wound down, Bowie State student and rap artist YungManny closed out the event on the HipHopWired Live Wire stage with a special performance, wrapping up a full day of culture, connection, and celebration at Maryland’s oldest HBCU.
