International News: Tropical systems Boris and Cristina trigger flooding concerns across Mexico and Central America

By Zoila Palma:  Tropical Depression Boris and Tropical Storm Cristina are bringing heavy rainfall to parts of Mexico and Central America, raising concerns about flooding and landslides across the area.

Boris weakened from a tropical storm to a tropical depression as it moved farther inland over southern Mexico, while Cristina strengthened into a tropical storm off the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Cristina formed Monday afternoon after strengthening from Tropical Depression Three-E. The storm was located about 95 miles west-northwest of Managua, Nicaragua, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and moving north-northeast at 3 mph.

Forecasters expect Cristina to linger along the Central American coast for several days before gradually turning northwestward into the open Pacific.

Tropical Storm Warnings remain in effect for Nicaragua and El Salvador, and the system is expected to produce widespread rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches, with isolated areas receiving up to 12 inches. Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala are all at risk of life-threatening flash flooding through midweek.

Meanwhile, Boris weakened to a tropical depression after moving inland over southern Mexico near Punta Maldonado. The system has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and is moving north-northwest at 6 mph. Although Tropical Storm Warnings along the Mexican coast have been discontinued, forecasters warn that Boris could still bring an additional 1 to 4 inches of rain to parts of Guerrero and Oaxaca before dissipating.
