Jalin Turner needed only 39 seconds to dispatch Kauê Fernandes via knockout in their lightweight bout at UFC 330 in Philadelphia this past Saturday. The 31-year-old Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor from Southern California pounced on Fernandes after dropping him with a left for the quick finish.
“I was trying to get a read on what was going to happen, kind of visualize what was going to happen, and 39 seconds was not in any of my predictions, manifestations, prayers, nothing,” Turner said of his win.
“I’m just thankful to be healthy. I’m thankful to be able to go back to my family. I’m thankful my opponent is healthy.”
On a card that featured several African-American mixed martial arts (MMA) talent, Chidi Njokuani defeated Joel Álvarez by unanimous decision, Charles Johnson took down Eduardo Chapolin by submission, Donte Johnson dismissed Eric McConico by knockout, Tresean Gore earned a win against Vicente Luque by unanimous decision, and Neil Magny notched a victory over Ramiz Brahimaj by technical knockout. In the two title fights, Islam Makhachev (welterweight) and Mackenzie Dern (women’s strawweight) both retained their titles by unanimous decision in front of an arena-record crowd of 19,238.
Tomorrow, Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) Fight Night: Mohegan Sun will take place from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. In the main event, No. 2-ranked Bryce Henry (7-0) will face No.1-ranked Carlos Trinidad-Snake (7-1). In the co-main event, Cody Vidal will battle Joseph Creer in a light heavyweight championship.
Also tomorrow, Puerto Rican-born, Brooklyn-raised Amanda Serrano will defend her WBA and WBO women’s featherweight titles against Lucrecia Anabella Manzur in California.
On Saturday in Las Vegas, Rolando Romero will defend his WBA welterweight championship against Brooklyn’s Teofimo Lopez Jr., who lost to Shakur Stevenson earlier this year in a light welterweight championship clash.
“I’m fighting a big puncher at 147 and going up to that weight for the first time,” Lopez said of moving up seven pounds. “We’re taking a risk, because it’s no risk, no reward. I’m just focusing on my objectives so I can come out victorious…I think Rolly’s skills are underappreciated. He controls the pace and makes it his fight; everyone overlooks that. But he’s not underrated on the stature side. He’s a world champion for a reason.”
