When news broke that R&B heavyweights Usher and Chris Brown are officially heading out on a joint tour, the internet was immediately set ablaze. Fans have been debating, dreaming, and pleading for a team-up of this magnitude for years.
But according to legendary producer and music executive Jermaine Dupri, this upcoming tour is much more than just a highly anticipated concert series; it is a historic cultural milestone.
Taking to Instagram to share his thoughts, Dupri weighed in on the massive excitement surrounding the announcement, explaining why this moment is bigger than just the music.
“I see all the excitement and everybody trying to go. And it is exciting,” the So So Def founder shared in the video. “But one of the most exciting things about this is that this is probably the most important thing that’s happened to Black music since I’ve been alive.”
For Dupri, the true weight of the Usher and Chris Brown tour lies in its undeniable economic impact. He believes that this joint venture presents a powerful opportunity for the world to witness the sheer force of the Black dollar and the immense control Black people have over popular culture.
He shared that the impact will be visible across all levels of the industry. The biggest victory, according to Dupri, is seeing “Black people spending money on Black people in stadiums.”
Historically, Black R&B and hip-hop artists have faced systemic hurdles when trying to book, promote, and sell out massive stadium spaces without having to pivot their sound or cross over into pop.
“In a space that’s always been told that we, you know, we couldn’t make it,” Dupri explained, reflecting on the industry’s past limitations. “We had to do something else to get to that space. This is it.”
The Raymond and Brown tour kicks off on Friday, June 26 at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.
