Junior Carnival Showdown Begins: Defending Champions Return as 59 Schools Battle for Soca and Calypso Titles

Defending champions are returning to the spotlight, fresh rivalries are brewing, and some of Saint Lucia’s most promising young performers are preparing for what could be the biggest showdown of Junior Carnival 2026.

The race for the National Schools Calypso and Soca crowns officially intensified on Wednesday as organisers unveiled the finalists for the second staging of the National Schools Calypso and Soca Competition, following a rigorous audition process involving 59 schools from across the island. With reigning champions seeking to hold onto their titles and new contenders determined to dethrone them, the competition is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated youth cultural events of the season.

In the Secondary Schools Calypso category, all eyes will once again be on reigning monarch Alex Pinel of the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School. After capturing the title last year with her standout performance of “School Girl,” Pinel is returning with a socially conscious entry titled “S.O.S – Save Our Society” as she attempts to secure back-to-back victories.

Among the schools hoping to stop her reign is Vieux Fort Comprehensive, last year’s runners-up, returning with “Teacher,” while Stanley Jon Odlum Secondary is bringing a contemporary twist to the calypso arena with “Blame The AI.”

The Secondary Schools Soca category is also expected to deliver intense competition, despite reigning champion Lady J not returning to defend the crown. St. Joseph’s Convent remains in contention with Ariel Henry stepping forward to represent the school, while other strong contenders include Ciceron Secondary with “A Tsunami” and Babonneau Secondary with “Young Energy.”

Meanwhile, the Infant and Primary School divisions are also preparing for a fierce musical battle. Ten schools advanced to the Primary Calypso Finals, including Anglican Infant with “What Should I Do,” Ave Maria Girls’ Primary with “Standing Strong,” and Ciceron R.C. Combined with “Change that Mentality.”

In the Primary Soca category, Ave Maria Girls’ Primary is expected to be among the frontrunners with “Lash Up,” while Babonneau Primary will look to energize the crowd with “St. Lucia Pay The Teacher.”

Organisers say the competition continues to serve as more than just entertainment, stressing that the initiative plays a key role in nurturing young talent, preserving Saint Lucia’s cultural heritage, and ensuring that traditional artforms remain relevant among younger generations.

The Primary School Finals are scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, 2026, while the Secondary School Finals will take place on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the Mindoo Phillip Park.
