Kampala City retain UBSA Super Four crown

Kampala City Beach Soccer Club wrote another chapter of dominance in Uganda’s sand court history on Sunday, successfully defending their Uganda Beach Soccer Association (UBSA) Super Four title.

In a thrilling finale at Bunjako Beach, the defending champions put on an offensive masterclass to dismantle St Lawrence University Beach Soccer Club (SLAU) 9-3, cementing their status as the undisputed heavyweights of the format.

Kampala City’s journey to glory was anything but straightforward. The semifinal showdown against Mutoola Beach Soccer Club tested the champions’ mettle in a tense, end-to-end battle.

After a scoreless opening period, Kampala City broke the deadlock in the second frame through strikes from Hassan Sulaiman and Sulaiman Ochero. Mutoola mounted a fierce late comeback, but Kampala City held firm to edge a 5-5 thriller (full-time 4-5 via official match progression), with Sharif Opuli and a brace from Godfrey Edweu sealing the narrow escape.

Meanwhile, the other side of the bracket witnessed unexpected drama when MUBS Beach Soccer Club failed to turn up for their semifinal fixture, handing St Lawrence an automatic berth into the championship match.

Energised and refocused, Kampala City faced St Lawrence in the ultimate showdown. The early exchanges suggested a tight contest as both sides traded blows to deadlock at 2-2 by the end of the first period, courtesy of a brace from Kampala City’s Sharif Opuli and replies from SLAU’s Murungi Rodgers and Martin Kikambi.

However, the second period belonged entirely to the champions. Kampala City turned on the style, ripping the game open with ruthless efficiency to surge into a commanding 6-3 lead.

Opuli continued his sensational scoring run by netting four goals in the final, complemented by a brace from Hassan Ali, completely overwhelming a tiring St Lawrence side. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read a resounding 9-3 in favor of Kampala City.

For Kampala City Head Coach Geoffrey Akabwai, the victory marked a monumental personal and professional milestone.

“I’m so glad today that my players played and we took back the trophy that they won last season. I was not a coach then, but I’m also happy as a coach to win my first trophy of Super 4,” Akabwai reflected after the match.

The coach was quick to praise his squad’s tactical discipline and the vital backing of the club’s hierarchy.

“They listened to the instructions and we won the first game of the semi-finals, then came and won the final game comfortably. I’m so proud of them and the management of Kampala Beach Soccer Club who managed to get the resources and brought us to win this game.”

With the Super Four trophy safely back in their cabinet, Kampala City is already turning its attention to the horizon. Akabwai noted that this triumph serves as a crucial springboard as they prepare to defend their broader league crown in the upcoming season.
