Uganda U17 Men’s Football National Team will have an extra opening to qualify for this year’s World Cup as they face Ghana on Saturday in Rabat, Morocco, at 10 PM EAT.
The Uganda Cubs and their counterparts, the Black Starlets from Ghana, will face off in a playoff to determine one of the two extra slots for Africa at the World Cup.
It should be noted that the quarterfinalists at the ongoing AFCON U17 in Morocco already secured their World Cup slots, but there are two extra slots to bring the number to ten.
The four teams that finished third across the four groups face off in a one-off game, and the winners qualify for the World Cup. In this year’s case, it is Uganda vs Ghana and Mozambique up against Ethiopia.
Uganda Cubs coach Kingston Laryea is confident his charges can win against Ghana and secure the ultimate target.
“We came here with an ultimate target of qualifying for the World Cup, and that is the only thing on our mind ahead of the game against Ghana. I believe the team is in good shape to fight and make sure we achieve our goal.”
Last year, when Uganda qualified for the maiden World Cup, they had to go through a playoff hurdle, edging The Gambia 2-1.
