Lawyer gets bail after arrest on theft charge

Legal aid directorate lawyer Eva Maria Nangolo, who was arrested on charges of theft and defeating or obstructing the course of justice last weekend, has been granted bail in an amount of N$2 000 after six days in custody.

Nangolo (47) was granted bail during an appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on Friday, after public prosecutor Menencia Hinda informed magistrate Auguste Simon that the state is no longer opposed to bail being granted to her.

Hinda told the magistrate during Nangolo’s first court appearance on the charges on Monday that the state objected to bail being granted to Nangolo, because of a risk that she would interfere with the police’s investigation of her case.

Nangolo was arrested on Saturday (16 May) in connection with the alleged theft of items from a Dis-Chem store in the Wernhil Park shopping centre in Windhoek.

The state is alleging that she left the store without paying for sunscreen valued at N$500, two containers of anti-ageing cream costing N$2 740 and vitamin supplements with a price of N$680.

It is also alleged that Nangolo defeated or obstructed the course of justice by refusing to open her car, in which she is alleged to have placed the items she is accused of having stolen from the shop, after a Windhoek City Police officer instructed her to open the vehicle.

Nangolo, who was represented by defence lawyers Tuna Nhinda and Vernon Lutibezi during her court appearance on Friday, was granted bail in an amount of N$2 000 on condition that she may not interfere with the continuing investigation of her case.

She has to return to court on 30 July.
