GROSS INSTITUTIONALISED DISABILITY OPPRESSION BY THE UK GOVERNMENT

I didn’t think I could be more astounded by the governments institutionalised disability oppression, however this week it hit a new high. I listened to the Transforming Communities for Inclusion webinar about the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and to the Mental Health Act 2025 and deinstitutionalisation. We know the days have gone when the UK led this field. Today we flag behind Mexico and Hungary, not that its a competition. The idea that the government can ignore “recommendations” made by the UN, can accept reports saying there are “grave and systemic” failings. They then ignore and doctor, (excuse the pun) by reallocating people into health facilities and small homes to change statistics. Have they forgotten they are dealing with human beings?

The organisation Liberation led by Dorothy Gould is bravely calling out these events. Where recommendations are ignored and continued cutting care in the community is institutionalising people. The webinar was held to encourage reporting of the oppressions by individuals, disabled people’s organisations and civil society groups.

The description of the procedure and the snail pace institutional setting and, as Ive said the lack of power to enforce recommendations made my blood curdle. Can this really be happening in 2026? The depravity is horrendous.

It’s not light listening, but I have already mentioned it to two friends, who are being institutionalised as you read this because of lack of community care.  Even a friend whose relatives had had to sign a waiver that their dying relative won’t use hospice care. Grim times. They need to be called out on this.
