Lil Nas X Announces Mother’s Death During Mental Health Recovery

Lil Nas X is mourning his mother, Tameka Hill, after announcing her death with a brief tribute carrying years of complicated love.

“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY,” the Grammy-winning artist wrote alongside family photographs. “This one’s gonna hurt.”

Lil Nas X offered no details about when or how Hill died, and her age had not been publicly confirmed.

The loss comes as the 27-year-old rebuilds his life after spending several months in rehabilitation and receiving a bipolar disorder diagnosis.

He recently returned to social media and celebrated living 10,000 days with a homemade cake, telling followers that he “made it.”

That hopeful update followed his August 21, 2025 arrest after police found him roaming Ventura Boulevard in underwear and cowboy boots before sunrise.

Police alleged he charged at responding officers and injured three during the encounter before authorities transported him to a hospital.

Lil Nas X later pleaded not guilty to three felony battery charges and one count of resisting an executive officer.

Authorities initially suspected a possible overdose, although toxicology testing reportedly found no drugs or alcohol in his system.

A Los Angeles judge admitted him into a two-year mental health diversion program in April, shifting the case away from trial.

Lil Nas X subsequently revealed that treatment helped him confront a condition he suspected for years but resisted addressing.

“First, I’ve been in rehab for a few months,” he explained. “Since then I’ve been back at home, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself and friends, trying to ground myself down to earth and get out of my head.”

His mother’s death now adds grief to a recovery period already shaped by continuing treatment and unresolved criminal charges.

Lil Nas X rarely discussed Hill publicly, but he described their strained relationship during a revealing 2020 interview following his rapid rise.

“I never really talk about my mom,” he said. “She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship.”

“Even trying to get her better, things didn’t quite work out,” he continued. “But there’s still love.”

His father, Robert Stafford, later defended him when critics accused the wealthy performer of abandoning Hill while she experienced addiction and homelessness.

Stafford said his son had repeatedly tried helping Hill, but money could not force someone struggling with addiction to accept treatment.

“For a 26-year-old to have to deal with what he’s dealing with, to be a breadwinner for a lot of people, the inability to change his mother’s situation and the pressure he puts on himself,” Stafford explained after the arrest. “That can weigh heavily on your heart.”

Lil Nas X previously described his grandmother’s 2018 death as his first major personal loss, saying the experience left him frightened and self-medicating.

His diversion agreement requires continued treatment and lawful behavior for two years before the court can dismiss all four felony charges.
