GIFT Konjana, the Zanu PF candidate, has emerged victorious in the Chegutu Ward 1 by-election after shrugging off competition from two independent candidates.
Konjana, an expelled Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) member who recently joined Zanu PF, secured victory ahead of independent candidate Tonderai Elisha Dausi and another independent Charles Mirisawu.
According to official results compiled by Ward Elections Officer, Charlene Mauyakufa, Konjana polled 367 edging his contenders Dausi, who garnered 301, while Mirisawu scrapped only nine votes.
Konjana’s triumph comes against a backdrop of a pattern of voter apathy that has in recent years characterised by-elections. In this particular poll, 34,57 percent of registered voters participated, according to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
The by-election was necessitated by the death of Councillor Kimpton Mkombwe, who won the seat in 2023 under the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) banner.
Konjana rose to prominence in 2018 after he allegedly won the Chegutu West seat for Member of Parliament but Dexter Nduna of the Zanu PF party was announced as the winner as a result of a clerical error made by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
The then MDC Alliance member challenged the mistake made by ZEC to no avail when a High Court judge dismissed his application based on a technicality. Nduna was sworn in for a five-year term as the MP for Chegutu West.
