Minister Chikunga to launch Disability Rights Awareness Month

Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, is expected to launch Disability Rights Awareness Month in Tshwane.

The campaign aims to promote and highlight barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from participating fully in social, economic, political and cultural life.

The launch includes an awareness walk from Church Square in Pretoria to the Union Buildings.

Chikunga has called for greater inclusion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

“Women with disabilities are affected even more than women without disabilities, and that is why we speak about measures to take. The announcements made by the President on four measures, we need to keep in mind that those should also be applicable to women with disabilities. Not only women who can walk, not only women who can speak and add their views, but women with disabilities who cannot speak for themselves. Those who cannot see a rapist or even the murderer, for that matter.”
