South Africa (21 May 2026)- South African content creator Mitch Matyana has once again found something strangely specific that a lot of people somehow relate to, and that’s Afrikaans pet names.
Known for joking about the little everyday things South Africans instantly recognise, Mitch recently had social media laughing after sharing his thoughts on why Afrikaans terms of endearment just sound more intense when people talk to their partners.
Comparing it to more common English nicknames like “babe” or “wifey”, he explained that Afrikaans versions just feel a little more dramatic, affectionate and full of character.
“Like babe, wifey, like, that’s cute, but like, there’s something about, ‘Oh, kom hier my skatabool.”
Whether it is “my skat”, “liefie”, “my engel” or the many variations South Africans invent along the way, Mitch says the language has a way of making even the simplest nickname sound heartfelt.
The clip has since sparked playful conversations online, with many people sharing the funniest Afrikaans pet names they have ever heard couples use on each other.
