MP pushes digital tax reforms to widen revenue base

DODOMA: TARIME Urban MP Esther Matiko has called for accelerated adoption of digital tax systems, saying they are key to expanding the country’s revenue base and closing gaps that enable tax evasion.

Speaking during the national budget session in Parliament today, Matiko said stronger digital infrastructure would improve transparency in financial transactions and make revenue collection more efficient and accountable.

She urged the government to fast-track the shift toward a cashless economy, arguing that reduced cash dependence would make it easier to trace transactions and curb corruption risks.

Matiko said digital payment systems would also help bring more businesses into the formal sector, ensuring fair contribution to national revenues.

She pointed to regional examples where countries have deployed electronic billing machines, electronic tax management systems, and e invoicing platforms that automatically transmit sales data to tax authorities, improving compliance and efficiency.

She explained that Tanzania has an opportunity to learn from such systems to modernize its tax administration and strengthen domestic revenue performance.

Matiko also noted that with more than 26 million smartphone users in the country, digital tools such as QR codes and barcode systems could be used to integrate transactions into tax systems and reduce reliance on manual audits.
