Nestor dominates after postseason accolades

The University of North Texas women’s basketball team cruised past ninth-seeded Florida Atlantic 80-57 on Wednesday evening, March 11, in the second round of the American Conference Championship. Playing at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, Saint Lucia’s Megan Nestor recorded her 20th double-double this season, the third Mean Green player ever to attain that milestone.

Nestor was fresh off a clutch of postseason honours. The 6-4 big from the fishing village of Canaries was named Defensive Player of the Year and earned placements on the All-Conference First Team, All-Newcomer Team and All-Defensive Team. She is just the second player from UNT ever to win the conference Defensive Player of the Year award.

The former national netballer continued to excel in her Division I playoff debut, with 16 points on just 10 shots, adding a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. As she has done all season, she dominated the boards on Wednesday with 12, including four at the offensive end.

Aysia Proctor led the Mean Green in scoring, with 24. She matched her career high with five three-pointers and shot 8-for-13 from the field en route to her sixth 20-point game of the year. Four UNT players got into double figures.

The victory gave head coach Jason Burton his 66th as head coach at North Texas, tying Judy Nelson for third-most in school history. The Mean Green now play fourth-seeded Tulsa on Thursday with a semifinal berth on the line. Now at 18-13 overall, UNT is looking to avenge a 57-53 defeat to Tulsa back on January 23.
