Saint Lucia’s top female basketballer, Megan Nestor, is closer to her dream of playing professionally after signing a training camp contract with the 2021 WNBA champions, Chicago Sky. The team announced Thursday that training camp – which begins this Sunday, April 19, at UIC’s Flames Athletic Center – marks the start of the Sky’s preseason ahead of the upcoming WNBA season.
The Sky have had a busy offseason, trading Angel Reese and adding key players such as Skylar Diggins-Smith, DiJonai Carrington, Azurá Stevens and Rickea Jackson to play alongside Kamilla Cardoso.
Nestor could carve out a significant role on the team. Originally from the fishing village of Canaries, she was the top rebounder in collegiate basketball last season with the University of North Texas Mean Green, averaging 12.8 points and 14.1 rebounds.
“It’s kind of different from college,” Nestor told St Lucia Times. “The opportunity presented itself, and I took it because going to the WNBA became a dream of mine. And going to training camp is one way you can accomplish that. Not getting drafted is not always the end of the world. You got people who go to training camp and make the team.”
Standing 6-4, the American League Defensive Player of the Year graduated from Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School, where she honed her talent in netball. First representing the national team in an Under-16 competition at the age of 11, she went on to captain the Under-23 team before joining the basketball team at Wayland Baptist University.
At UNT, Nestor had an outstanding game against Texas Southern, scoring 34 points and grabbing 31 rebounds, achieving just the third 30-30 game in the NCAA since at least 1981-82.
The Caribbean star will compete for a chance to make the Sky’s final roster, aiming for the 2026 season opener on May 9 against the expansion Portland Fire. The training camp precedes this season, with Chicago coming off a 10-34 record last year.
