Kenyan star Nikita Kering continues to ride the momentum of her newly released EP The Lick Back, which officially arrived on 29 May. Now weeks into its release, the five-track project is steadily solidifying its place as a defining moment in her artistic evolution.
Marking her first studio body of work since 2022’s The Other Side, the EP captures Nikita in a more assertive and self-directed space, shaped by themes of emotional independence, personal boundaries, and reclaiming control after periods of growth and change.
Sonically, The Lick Back blends R&B foundations with Dancehall influences, Gengetone textures, and Afro-fusion experimentation. The project moves across English, Swahili, and Patois, reflecting both her versatility and her East African identity while still maintaining global appeal.
Production from Vic West, Cap, and Brim gives the EP a cohesive yet dynamic sound, balancing club-ready energy with emotional depth. The collaboration with Sofiya Nzau on the intro stands out as a cultural and sonic fusion moment, merging Kikuyu and Nandi influences into a bold opening statement.
Across the EP, Nikita explores different emotional states: Niwache delivers firm boundary-setting energy, Give Me My Money confronts industry exploitation and self-worth, while Outside leans into post-breakup confidence and liberation. The closer, Sema Ukweli, brings a more reflective tone, focusing on honesty, emotional clarity, and relationship uncertainty.
With The Lick Back, Nikita Kering reinforces her growth into a more fearless and experimental phase, positioning herself firmly among East Africa’s most versatile contemporary voices.
