By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 20-year-old air conditioning technician has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $7,000 worth of jewellery from a client’s bedroom while helping to install an air conditioning unit at her home.

Jahsied Smith, of Belize City, appeared before the Chief Magistrate on Monday and pleaded guilty to theft.

The complainant, a Belize Bank employee, reported that she left her jewelry box inside a bedroom drawer before leaving for work on July 7. Her husband had contracted E&J’s Aircon Electrical Company Limited to install an air conditioning unit in the room.

Smith reportedly visited the home with his employer and another worker. When the woman returned at around 12:55 p.m., she discovered that jewelry valued at $7,250 was missing, including gold bangles, a gold chain and a gold ring.

Police investigating the report found the missing jewellery inside the employer’s pickup truck. Smith and the two other workers were detained, and Smith later admitted to stealing the items and provided police with a caution statement.

Because Smith has no previous convictions, the Chief Magistrate granted him bail of $2,000 with one surety in the same amount while the court awaits a sentencing recommendation from the Community Rehabilitation Department.

Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on August 18, 2026. Until then, he must report to the Queen Street Police Station every Tuesday and Friday and must not be charged with another criminal offence.
