United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Thursday said that India and the US were nearing the end of negotiations for a trade deal, but added that an agreement was not imminent as the two sides had identified a “universe of items that are sticking points”, ANI reported.

“We are continually trying to finish the trade deal with India…,” he said.

Greer’s remarks came a day after he met Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal during the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The US is hosting the G20 this year.

Greer described his conversation with Goyal as “very constructive”.

“At the same time, I do not think there is something imminent, but we truly have identified the universe of items that are sticking points,” ANI quoted him as saying. “We are working diligently towards them.”

Greer also said US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi could speak again “very soon” to assess progress of the trade deal.

On Wednesday, Modi and Trump reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation, including trade, defence, energy and critical technologies, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
