The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago will kick off grand opening celebrations on Thursday, June 18, 2026, timed perfectly ahead of Juneteenth, with a dedication ceremony honoring Barack and Michelle Obama, since its construction began back in August 2021.
The opening on this date is significant because it symbolizes racial justice, freedom, and the “hope” for a better future, connecting directly to the center’s mission and the South Side community. The museum and public space will welcome visitors starting June 19, running events through June 21 to unite changemakers, locals, and supporters in celebrating community impact.
Came with an expensive price tag of an estimated $850 million and is currently the most expensive presidential library in history, funded privately through the Obama Foundation.

Visitors will be able to swing by the 19.3-acre campus located in Chicago’s historic Jackson Park for some tasty bites and drinks at the cafe or restaurant, and grab some merchandise at the retail shop.
The eight-story museum building features two cultural buildings, a massive 5,000-square-foot library branch, a plaza, a winter garden, and athletic facilities.
