A Walvis Bay resident who admitted to murdering his five-year-old stepson through a brutal assault three years ago was sentenced to an effective prison term of 30 years on Thursday.
Judge Naomi Shivute sentenced Riddick Narib (33) in the Windhoek High Court to 28 years’ imprisonment on a charge of murder and to a five-year jail term on a count of obstructing the course of justice.
Three years of the sentence on the charge of obstructing the course of justice should be served concurrently with the sentence on the murder charge, Shivute ordered.
Narib pleaded guilty on the two charges three weeks ago.
He admitted that he murdered his stepson, Dantali Eiseb (5), at Walvis Bay on 6 January 2023, and then buried the boy’s body in a shallow grave.
Dantali was killed when Narib struck him repeatedly in the face with a brick.
Narib’s explanation for the murder was that he killed Dantali because he wanted to hurt the boy’s mother, from whom he was separated at the time of the incident.
Narib could have resolved his marital problems in a decent and civilised manner, instead of killing an innocent child, Shivute said during the sentencing.
Society demands that people who commit horrendous crimes should be removed from it for a long time, because they are a danger to society, Shivute also said.
