Odell Beckham Jr. may be facing one of the hardest decisions an athlete can make: figuring out when it’s time to walk away.

The New York Giants released Beckham on Tuesday after just three games, bringing an unexpectedly brief reunion between the franchise and its former star to an end.

“The decision to part ways with the former franchise icon doesn’t come as a surprise,” NFL.com reported. Beckham played just 19 snaps over three games, according to Next Gen Stats, and saw only one target. He didn’t catch a pass.

Simply making the team was something of a victory for the 33-year-old receiver. The Giants selected Beckham with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and he eventually became one of the league’s most electrifying players. But after making New York’s initial 53-man roster in August, Beckham never found a role in the offense.

The Giants are already thin at wide receiver, but Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields and Darnell Mooney have established themselves as the team’s primary options. With Beckham unable to crack the rotation and not contributing on special teams, there was little reason to keep him around beyond nostalgia.

The Giants also needed help at punt returner. With Braxton Berrios no longer available through practice squad elevations, New York signed him to the active roster and moved on from Beckham.

The Giants had hoped Beckham could summon some of the magic that made him a three-time Pro Bowler to begin his career. Instead, his return ended without a single catch.

Now Beckham faces an uncomfortable question: Is this the end, or does another team have one more chance for OBJ?
