Two-time champions Omusati region are gearing up to make waves at this year’s edition of the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup.
The region previously lifted the prestigious national youth tournament title in 2014 and, most recently, triumphed again in 2024 when the competition was hosted at Gobabis.
This year’s tournament is set to take place at Keetmanshoop in the ||Kharas region, from 3 to 5 April, where the country’s top regional youth teams will battle for top honours.
In preparation for the competition, Omusati began their selection process with trials held last month, before trimming the squad down to a final group.
Head coach Shipena Nakalondo expresses full confidence in the players selected, emphasising their commitment and readiness for the challenge ahead.
Despite being drawn in a challenging group alongside defending champions, the Kunene region, Nakalondo remains optimistic about his team’s chances.
“We respect every team in the competition, including the defending champions, but we are focused on our own game. The boys are ready, and we are going there to compete and give our best,” he says.
Nakalondo also highlights the importance of such tournaments in developing young talent and has extended his appreciation to the sponsors for their continued support.
“We are grateful to Nedbank Namibia for providing this kind of platform for young players to showcase their talent. Opportunities like these are important for the growth of football in the country,” he adds.
Omusati will be aiming to draw from their past success and experience as they look to reclaim the title and further cement their reputation as one of the country’s strongest youth football regions.
