By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Ministry of Immigration has launched an internal investigation into suspected embezzlement at the Belize City Immigration Office following reports that more than $150,000 may be missing.
Sources say the alleged scheme involved the reversal of official receipts after customers had already paid cash for immigration services.
According to reports, customers would receive legitimate receipts after making payments, but the transactions were later allegedly cancelled in the system, allowing the cash collected to go unaccounted for.
Preliminary findings reportedly uncovered more than 800 reversed receipts dating back to February 2025, raising concerns that the losses could total well into six figures.
At least one immigration officer is reportedly under suspicion as investigations continue.
