By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says a new board for the Reconstruction and Development Corporation, better known as RECONDEV, could be named by the end of this week.
Asked by reporters about the timeline, Briceño said he hopes the new board will be appointed shortly. The issue has gained attention because RECONDEV has been chaired by Brian Mira, the brother of former Home Affairs Minister Oscar Mira, who is currently on a three-month leave of absence pending an audit into procurement processes at the Ministry of Defence.
Public reports have noted that RECONDEV oversees planning, land management, infrastructure planning, and building approvals in Belmopan, despite the existence of an elected City Council.
Briceño was also asked about footage reportedly showing a meeting involving Mira and persons linked to the current RECONDEV board. He said he had not reviewed the footage, but added that Mira remains a member of the National Assembly and Government, and is therefore not barred from meeting with government officials.
Briceño previously confirmed that the RECONDEV board would be replaced to remove any appearance of improper influence.
