The World Bank has warned that stubbornly high poverty, deep income inequality and a worsening jobs crisis are undermining the country’s long-term growth prospects and threatening its ambitions of becoming a more inclusive upper-middle-income economy.

In its latest report, “Seizing the Moment: How Botswana Can Turn Crisis into Opportunity,” the World Bank says Botswana’s economic challenges extend far beyond slowing diamond revenues. It argues that persistent poverty and one of the world’s highest levels of inequality have become structural barriers to sustainable development.
