THE Correctional Service of Canada, along with the public safety and law enforcement community on Sunday honoured fallen officer Ramandeep Kaur Maan, 25, with a regimental funeral in Edmonton, Alberta.
Correctional Officer Maan of Edmonton Institution for Women was killed on August 6 in a rural Alberta crash along with Correctional Officer Nicolae Serban and inmate Kiara Mooswa.
Police say that a box truck collided with a Correctional Service Canada minivan that was transferring an inmate at an intersection about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. All three in the van died at the scene. The driver of the box truck sustained minor injuries.
According to Maan’s brother, Kamalpreet Singh Maan, “Ramandeep was only 25 years old. Born and raised in Gudhe village, Ludhiana, Punjab, she came to Canada as an international student with big dreams, a strong work ethic, and a determination to build a better future. Through years of hard work and sacrifice, she completed her education, established herself in Alberta, and recently began her career as a Correctional Officer with the Correctional Service of Canada.”
Talal Dakalbab, Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada, in an eulogy at her funeral service, at the Edmonton Convention Centre, told her parents from India that today, they were being asked to endure something no parent should ever have to endure – the loss of a child.
He added: “There is nothing I can say that can make the pain smaller but I hope you can look around this room today and know that your daughter made a difference. She made a difference to the people who worked beside her; she made a difference to the people whose lives she touched; and she made a difference to the Correctional Service of Canada.”
Dakalbab said: “She had only recently joined our CSC family, but service is not measured in years; it is measured in commitment, in character, in what we give of ourselves while we are here – and by that measure, Raman served with distinction.”
He spoke of Raman’s determination, kindness, ambition and devotion to the CSC family. He added: “And the young woman who came to this country with hopes for the future and choose to devote part of that future to serving Canada, that is how she deserves to be remembered.”
