A new Royal Caribbean megaship is officially taking shape in France.
The cruise line has marked a major construction milestone on its seventh Oasis Class vessel, holding a keel-laying ceremony at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, the traditional moment that signals the start of full ship assembly and the beginning of the final build process ahead of launch.
The ship, which has not yet been named, is expected to debut in 2028 and will become the latest addition to Royal Caribbean’s lineup of some of the largest and most recognizable cruise ships in the world.
A Key Moment In Construction
The ceremony marked the placement of the first steel block in the dry dock, a milestone known throughout the maritime industry as the ship’s keel laying.
As part of the tradition, representatives from Royal Caribbean and Chantiers de l’Atlantique placed newly minted coins beneath the keel. The custom dates back centuries and is intended to bring good fortune to the vessel, its crew and future passengers.
With the keel now in place, construction enters a new phase as the shipyard begins assembling what will eventually become Royal Caribbean’s next Oasis Class vacation experience.
The Next Oasis-Class Ship
Royal Caribbean has not yet revealed the ship’s name, homeport or deployment plans, but the vessel will join a class that includes some of the company’s most successful ships, including Wonder of the Seas, Utopia of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas.
The Oasis Class transformed the cruise industry when it debuted, introducing neighborhood-style ship design, expansive entertainment districts, outdoor parks, water attractions, large-scale production shows and a wide range of dining concepts.
The new ship is expected to continue that formula while adding updated experiences and new features developed for the next generation of Royal Caribbean travelers.
What Royal Caribbean Is Saying
According to the company, the seventh Oasis Class ship will bring together new adventures, dining venues, entertainment experiences and attractions designed for a wide range of vacation styles.
Specific details remain under wraps, with Royal Caribbean saying additional information will be announced closer to the ship’s debut.
That leaves plenty of questions still unanswered, including where the ship will sail, what new attractions could be included and whether it will introduce another evolution of the Oasis Class concept.
Why It Matters For Cruisers
Royal Caribbean continues to invest heavily in larger ships and destination-focused experiences, particularly across the Caribbean, where the line maintains one of the region’s largest cruise networks.
Many of the company’s newest vessels have featured extensive Caribbean itineraries and visits to Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas, along with ports throughout the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean.
While the 2028 vessel’s future deployment has not yet been announced, the Caribbean remains the most likely stage for Royal Caribbean’s newest flagship experiences.
The keel-laying ceremony may be largely symbolic, but it represents the point where a future cruise ship begins to become a reality. Over the next two years, thousands of workers at the Saint-Nazaire shipyard will assemble what will become the newest member of one of cruising’s most influential classes.
Royal Caribbean says more details on the ship’s name, features and itineraries will be revealed in the coming years as construction progresses toward its anticipated 2028 debut.
