A buoyant Team Saint Lucia departed the island on Wednesday, April 1, to attend the CARIFTA Aquatics Championships in Martinique. The event takes place from April 3-8 at the Pierre Samot Community Aquatic Centre in Le Lamentin and in the Anses d’Arlet coastal area. The 12-member team travelled by boat after an intense preparation period.

The group, which includes several returning medallists, is looking forward to bringing back more silverware after the Easter weekend. The home-based swimmers had their final training sessions last Saturday and Sunday at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre.

As part of those sessions, team manager Denise Parks told St Lucia Times that the swimmers received a motivational talk from West Indies men’s cricket head coach Daren Sammy and a mental session with sports psychologist Yasmine St Ange.

Hopes are high for Sapphire Parks in the 11-12 girls’ division, University of Michigan freshman Antoine Destang in the 15-17 boys, along with Jayden Xu and Noah Dorville, US-based Fayth Jeffrey in the 15-17 girls, and Fayth Lubrun, also in that division.

A number of talented newcomers will be keen to strut their stuff in Martinique at the Pierre Samot pool.

On funding, Paul James, president of the Saint Lucia Aquatics Federation, told St Lucia Times that the organisation opted not to seek financial support from the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee at this time, as it will seek sponsorship for meets later in the year.
