Scottland FC coach Norman Mapeza laments ‘local football is going backwards’

SCOTTLAND FC head coach Norman Mapeza has sparked debate after declaring that football in Zimbabwe is “going backwards,” following an incident which saw players battling for the centre spot during halftime when his side played MWOS at Ngoni Stadium in Norton.

Mapeza was speaking after picking a crucial 1-0 win, which saw his side ending a three-match winless run, thank to Khama Billiat’s second half strike.

Although his team managed to win, Mapeza did not hold back, expressing frustration over what he described as a lack of progress and professionalism amongst players who during halftime battled to stand at the centre spot for nearly five minutes, until the referee forced them out.

“Look, there are so many things happening in our football at the moment…

“I didn’t know what was happening outside the pitch, but look, where do we really want to go with our football if such things are happening in our football?

“There are certain things happening, sometimes we don’t talk about it, but we need to develop.

“If such things are going to happen in our football, where we now don’t believe in our, for us as coaches, in coaching, the players believe in understanding the tactical side of the game,” said Mapeza.

Saturday’s centre spot incident is not the first clash in local football. Recently, FC Hunters and FC Platinum players battled to have the match ball at the centre spot at Rufaro, the same happened when Hunters played Scottland FC at the same venue.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s draw saw Scottland moving to third position on the log with 17 points, two behind log leaders CAPS United, who are up for an uphill task against Highlanders at Barbourfields.

Mapeza’s side is one of the four teams yet to record a defeat this season, the other three being Ngezi Platinum Stars, Dynamos and Highlanders.
