The American Music Awards (AMAs) have unveiled their 2026 nominees, with several African artists earning recognition across major categories.

South African pop princess Tyla has earned the most nods with three nominations, as the Chanel superstar is up for Best Music Video, Best Female R&B Artist, and Best Afrobeats Artist. The latter is a keenly-contested category which also includes Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema and MOLIY.

Burna Boy is also vying for honours in the Best Hip-Hop Song category, a nod earned by his collaboration with U.S rapper Gunna on wgft. To clinch this particular award, both artists would have to fend off Cardi B (ErrTime), Drake (NOKIA), Playboi Carti and The Weeknd (Rather Lie), as well as YKNIECE, Quavo, Metro Boomin and Breskii who teamed up on Take Me Thru Dere.

MOLIY

Celebrating the year’s most iconic music, the American Music Awards is the world’s largest fan-voted award show honouring today’s most influential artists and their passionate fanbases. The winners are determined entirely by fan voting. The voting process, including tabulation and verification, is managed by a third-party independent company. The American Music Award nominees are determined by fan engagement across streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay and tour grosses. These measurements are tracked by Billboard and Luminate.

REMA

Created by legendary producer and visionary Dick Clark and first awarded in 1974, the American Music Awards is known for delivering half a century worth of iconic performances and enduring moments that have defined and shaped pop culture, as well as a history of introducing audiences to breakthrough artists. Every year, it broadcasts globally across linear and digital platforms.

This year, the AMAs will stream on CBS and Paramount+ on Monday 25th May 2026.
