The inaugural Talking Drums Festival, a two-day event celebrating hip-hop’s global influence and its deep connections to African culture, is set to take place this December in Accra, Ghana’s capital city.
The festival is expected to attract tens of thousands of attendees from across the continent and the wider African diaspora. More than 40 artists from the United States, United Kingdom, and several African countries are set to perform during the celebration, which will combine music, dance, and cultural showcases.
“For over fifty years, hip-hop has influenced not just music fans but countless other creative industries. The Talking Drums Festival will celebrate this impact by uniting the infectious cadence of the sound with the energy of the performers and fan culture to showcase its connection to Africa—and, of course, its global dominance,” stated Ruddy Kwakye, Executive Producer of the festival.
The festival forms part of a multi-year partnership with the Black Star Experience, a national branding initiative by the Government of Ghana. The collaboration builds on the legacy of the “Beyond the Return” campaign, which encourages members of the global Black diaspora to reconnect with Africa through culture, art, tourism, and heritage.
According Rex Owusu Marfo, the Presidential Coordinator for the Black Star Experience, “Ghana’s esteemed reputation as the Culture Capital of Africa, over the years, has firmly established it as a prominent destination for global experiences, attracting visitors from around the world. The nation’s dynamic and diverse musical heritage, along with its disruptive cultural scene, positions Ghana as the ideal host for this premier celebration of the hip-hop genre, a genre that continues to shape and energize cultures worldwide.”
Organisers have indicated that the full line-up and programme details will be released soon. The festival will take place on 29th and 30th December 2025.
