Content creators are starting to come to the harsh realization that not everything can or should be filmed, and one substitute teacher has learned her lesson after just one day on the job.

In a video that has since been deleted, Miata Borders, otherwise known as @thehandmade.ceo on TikTok, recorded a day-in-the-life vlog where she filmed her first day substituting at Lake Cormorant High School in Mississippi and discreetly captured her interactions with students and made questionable comments about one student in an added voice-over, according to Wreg, a news channel in Memphis, Tennessee.

In a clip that has been reposted by folks online, the 24-year-old substitute called a student who made eye contact with her “Shorty,” and joked that she needs to “get up out of these schools, these kids tryna take me down.”

Though the video has been removed, and Borders has lost her role as a substitute teacher, that hasn’t stopped the internet from coming for Borders and DeSoto County School District for hiring her in the first place.

“You schools gotta start screening these f****** people better, and I know you’re trying to let her slide because of the LGBT… you don’t want it to look like you’re discriminating against her from being a teacher… but there’s no reason why teachers are recording students at all,” said TikToker @isupk_atlanta.

Border’s sexuality is another thing that was brought up by viewers of the video, as the ending of the original vlog showed the TikToker, who is a masc-lesbian, wearing a strap-on.

“The fact that she said (as a substitute teacher) ‘I let them do what they wanna do’ and her GRWM reel (showed her) wearing a strap-on sealed her fate,” commented one user.

“As a stud teacher, I’ll clear it up. We sign contracts when hired. We sign a contract saying no social media posting of the children without consent. We also sign a contract swearing to protect all children. She messed up bad,” commented another user.

In response to the backlash, Borders made another TikTok to try and explain her video, but all it did was make things worse.

“I’m a content creator. I record everything I do, so it was typical for me… Aside from the bodycam that was already recording, everything else was recorded when I was alone… This was my first time subbing ever. I had no idea I couldn’t record students, or else I definitely wouldn’t have done it. I’m by far no predator or anything close to it.”

Borders then stated that because she is a content creator, the kids in the school knew who she was, and they would take her down out of excitement of getting to meet her. However, folks online were not feeling Borders’ apology or explanation as they continued to hound her TikTok comments.

“She explained what she meant, and I still don’t understand what she meant… I somehow feel gaslit,” wrote one user.

“Delete this. You’re not helping your own case,” added another.

“Put the phones down! Tired of these teachers recording in class for content,” commented another.

Now, Borders has created a GoFundMe after claiming that she “has lost everything,” and is asking for donations to keep her afloat while she looks for a new job, which has given her a mixture of backlash and pity.

“Some people wanna be the ‘cool adult’ so bad they forget that they’re supposed to be the adult,” added one user.

“Self-awareness is KEY. Take time for some serious reflection and what is allowed in that professional capacity,” added another.

Neither Lake Cormorant High School nor the DeSoto School District has made a comment on the video.
