MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Over the past two days, officials from Somalia’s presidential palace, Villa Somalia, have launched sweeping operations across the country’s largest military bases, including those within the Ministry of Defense, General Gordon, Jalle Siad, Damanyo, and Villa Baidoa. For the first time since Somalia’s military was established in the early 1960s, soldiers at every rank, from recruits to generals, have been systematically asked to provide detailed information about their clan affiliations, down to their immediate family.
This reorganisation coincides with the unannounced relocation, over the past two weeks, of troops stationed in the Shabelle and Hiran regions -areas closely associated with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s clan – to the presidential guard unit. The transfers, made without notifying army command, have sparked unease and suspicion within the broader military.
A significant number of these troops have been drawn from their original units and concentrated within the presidential guards, forming a force analysts suggest is designed to be deeply loyal to the president. These units are intended to join previously positioned troops already tasked with securing the presidential palace and the capital, Mogadishu, in its entirety.
Observers note that the timing of this operation, set to take effect this month, appears aimed at pre-empting opposition manoeuvres that could challenge President Mohamud’s ambitions as his term nears its conclusion next month.
