After starting their CAVB Men’s Club Championship with a 3-1 victory over Equity, a daunting task awaited tournament debutants, Sport-S Volleyball Club.

The Ugandan champions were scheduled to face two contenders, Kepler and Al Ahly, back-to-back in what would be a major reality check for Malic Damulira’s charges.

First up for Sport-S was Kepler, backed by a sparse home crowd, at Stade Petit on Friday night. While they were overwhelming underdogs in the contest, Sport-S put up a strong fight in the 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 20-25) defeat.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game because that’s what you expect at this level,” Damulira said.

Kepler roared ahead in the opening set and opened a six-point lead but Sport-S erased what seemed like a comfortable lead, finding gaps in Kepler’s net defence and relatively shaky reception to make the set a contest.

In the subsequent sets, Kepler’s loaded attack, which has the likes of Mohammed Radhi Krid, fans’ favourite Jair Santiago, Cedrick Kageruka, Djordje Jovovic, as well as vet John Nkurunziza started to hum and Sport-S net defence couldn’t contain, leaving Nicholas Agaba and Jonathan Tumukunde with a lot of work to do in the back zone.

Sport-S will take the same court first today as they battle Al Ahly.
