Sports Tourism could drive new visitors, jobs and economic growth

By Zoila Palma:  Sports tourism could become a major opportunity for Belize to diversify its tourism industry, attract visitors during traditionally slower periods and create new economic opportunities for communities across the country.

During the 1st ever National Sports summit, Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) President Efren E. Perez participated in a panel discussion on “Sports Tourism, Diaspora Engagement and Regional Opportunities,” highlighting the importance of collaboration between government, tourism stakeholders, sporting associations, athletes, communities, event organizers and regional partners.

Perez noted that Belize has the natural assets, cultural diversity, sporting talent and regional connections needed to develop a stronger sports tourism market. He emphasized opportunities to strengthen the national sporting events calendar, improve infrastructure and support local athletes.

The Ministry of Tourism noted that developing travel packages around sporting events could help transform Belize’s sporting strengths into market-ready visitor experiences while promoting tourism, national pride, youth development and inclusive economic growth.
