Forced to pull a load far too heavy, this beautiful pony finally caught the break he deserved after a chance encounter with the SPCA changed his life forever.

Cape Town, South Africa (22 May 2026) – Forced to pull a load far heavier than his own weight, one poor pony found stranded on Morgenster Road in Lentegeur has finally caught a break.

The distressed equine was discovered by chance by a team in the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Mobile Clinic vehicle, which was in the area at the time. The team then noticed the pony was struggling to continue pulling a cart that appeared to be broken down.

Concerned for the animal’s welfare, the Mobile Clinic driver immediately alerted SPCA Inspectors, who responded to the scene alongside the City of Cape Town’s Auxiliary Law Enforcement Animal Control Unit.

Upon inspection, it became clear that the pony had been subjected to an excessive and unreasonable load – a whole car body.

“The cart itself had physically broken under the strain of the weight it was carrying, a clear indication of just how extreme the load was. If the cart could not withstand the weight, neither could the pony expected to pull it,” Cape of Good Hope SPCA said.

The pony was safely removed by the SPCA on grounds of cruelty.

The animal welfare organisation further confirmed that the drivers and owner of the pony and cart now face criminal charges in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 for overloading the animal and subjecting it to cruelty, as well as charges under the City of Cape Town Animal Keeping By-Law.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA continues to encounter working equines being exploited, overworked, neglected, and forced to pull loads far beyond what is humane or lawful.

“This is not the first case. It will not be the last, unless the system changes. But change is coming. The redrafted Animal Keeping By-Law, which the Cape of Good Hope SPCA made significant contributions to, goes out for public participation this month.”

We thank the SPCA for their relentless dedication, vital oversight, and lifesaving protection of working animals.
