Ten Years Later, Mamelodi Sundowns Bring a Second African Star Home

Teboho Mokoena’s crucial goal helped Sundowns lift another continental crown and book their place at the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

Morocco (25 May 2026) – Ten years ago, Mamelodi Sundowns climbed to the top of African football for the very first time.

Now, a decade later, they have done it again. And for many South African football fans, that second CAF Champions League star feels just as special.

Sundowns were crowned African champions after securing a hard-fought 2-1 aggregate victory over FAR Rabat, with Teboho Mokoena delivering the crucial goal in Morocco that ultimately sealed the title.

A full circle feeling. Ten years after their historic 2016 triumph over Zamalek, Sundowns are once again sitting at the summit of African club football.

And while there have been disappointments along the way, including narrowly missing out on the Premiership title this season, the club still found a way to deliver one of the biggest achievements in African football.

This latest triumph is about a South African club continuing to compete against the best on the continent year after year and still finding ways to evolve, rebuild and stay relevant. The squad that conquered Africa this time around reflects just how far the club has grown over the years.

And now, with a second African star above the badge, Sundowns have once again cemented their place among the continent’s elite.

The victory also secures another appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup in 2029, giving them another opportunity to test themselves on the global stage after their memorable run in the United States last year.
